You can’t fake quality any more than you can fake a good meal; it either is or isn’t good, and everybody knows it.
If we intend to provide a better life through a better design and construction, we can’t ignore the quality, stability and safety of the environments we create. Although budgets are important, we shouldn’t measure “everything” in terms of an economic spreadsheet. There is something called quality of life and it’s important.
Sometimes it’s the last 10-20% of effort or resource we devote to a project that creates 80% of the true result. In sales it’s known as the Pareto principle and can mean the difference between failure and success.
In design it’s much the same. It becomes the icing on the cake and makes all of the emotional impact what people experience when they see and feel the result, as well as the soundness and longevity of the build and the well-being of those using the space.
Make the Workmanship Surpass the Materials.
Speaking of spreadsheets; it isn’t necessarily the hightest quality of materials that create the emotional impact. But it’s how the material that is chosen to be treated and fused into the overall design that makes the difference. That is where workmanship comes in. Even the highest grade of mateials treated in or installed in a sloppy way will not provide a quailty look and feel.
